OKLAHOMA 7, IOWA ST 6 (SO) In what was the most exciting game of the season so far, the 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club got their act together and finally showed some testicular fortitude and character with a thrilling, come-from-behind 7-6 shootout win over No. 4 Iowa State on Friday evening in Ames, Iowa.
The Sooners jumped out early with a goal from forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) just 1:19 into the game. Iowa State tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal but forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) tipped in a shot from the point at the 13:08 mark to give OU a 2-1 lead, which lead would hold up through the remainder of the period. In the second period, everything went Iowa State's way as the Cyclones scored four goals, offset only by an unassisted tally by defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TX). When Iowa State tied the game at 3-3, the Sooners seemingly lost their collective mind and took some utterly incredulous penalties, allowing ISU to take a 5-3 lead to the locker rooms after 40 minutes of action. Something just shy of the epiphany must have occurred during the second intermission as the Sooners charged out for the third period ready for action. Forward Wil Petty (Arlington, TX) scored at 6:25 to bring the Sooners to within one goal at 5-4. Forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) tied the game at 5-5 with a garbage goal at the 10:42 mark. The Cyclones took a 6-5 lead but with three minutes to play, Gebbie scored his second of the evening to tie the game at 6-6. There was no scoring in overtime and in the ensuing shootout, all three Sooners shooters scored compared to only one for Iowa State, giving the Sooners a stunning 7-6 win over the No. 4 Cyclones. Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) stopped 38 of 44 ISU shots while the Cyclones' Erik Hudson stopped 17 of 24 shots. Oklahoma was 0 for 2 on the power play while ISU was 2 for 10 with the man advantage. Oklahoma improves to 21-6-2 with the gritty win while Iowa State loses for only the third time at home this season and has a record of 28-5-2. Oklahoma stays in Ames to face No. 4 Iowa State again on Saturday night.
