OKLAHOMA 3CENTRAL OK 1

The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club made the most of their shortest road trip of the season with a 3-1 win at No. 11 Central Oklahoma on Friday night in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TXput the Sooners up early with a shot from the red line that caught Central's goalkeeper napping as the puck sailed right over the glove hand into the UCO at 3:31 of the first period to give OU a 1-0 lead.  Central tied the game with a power play goal with just over five minutes to go in the period.  But for that lone UCO goal, the Sooners defense clamped down for the remainder of the evening to keep the Bronchos from scoring again.  In the second period, forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZcontinued his scoring ways with a power play goal at 8:12 to put the Sooners up 2-1.  It seemed as if Oklahoma was trying to let the Bronchos back in the game as OU had to kill four Central power plays during the second stanza but the Sooners' defense stood firm and never relented.  In the third period, Oklahoma peppered the UCO net with 20 official shots during the period.  After UCO pulled their goalie for the extra attacker with 25 seconds to go in the game, forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) sealed the victory and shushed the tipsy Central crowd with an empty netter just eight seconds from the final buzzer to make tonight's final 3-1 in favor of the Sooners.

Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) earned his 7th win of the season as he stopped 28 of 29 shots from Central.  UCO goalie Justin Sgro stopped 38 of the 40 Oklahoma shots he faced before being pulled for an extra attacker late in the game.  Oklahoma's power play was 1 for 8 while UCO was 1 for 10 while on the man advantage.

The local road win improves Oklahoma's record to 12-1-0 while Central Oklahoma now has a record of 10-3-1.  The scene shifts south for Saturday's game as Central Oklahoma travels the short distance to the Blazers Ice Centre for game two of this weekend's home-and-home series.

CENTRAL OK 2, OKLAHOMA 1

The 6th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club lost their first home game of the season as No. 11 Central Oklahoma beat the Sooners 2-1 on Saturday night at the Blazers Ice Centre.

The first period was scoreless but not without chances as the Sooners had five power play chances in the first twenty minutes of action.  Central Oklahoma struck first with a goal midway through the second period to take a 1-0 lead.  Forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) tied the game at 16:25 of the period and it appeared as if the period would end tied.  However, Central scored on a power play goal with just over a minute left in the period to take a 2-1 lead to the second intermission.  The third period was tightly played as the Sooners tried to tie the game but it was to no avail as Central ended up winning the game 2-1.  An otherwise exciting and well-played game was marred at the conclusion by a bench-clearing melee at center ice.  Three players from each team were penalized for fighting and will be ineligible to play in their next games

Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MNsuffered his first loss of the season even though he stopped 19 of 21 shots from Central.  UCO goalie Cory McGlone  stopped 24 of 25 Oklahoma shots.  Oklahoma was 0 for 6 on the power play while UCO was 1 for 3 with the man advantage.

The loss is the first at home for Oklahoma this season and brings the Sooners record to 12-2-0 while Central improves to 11-3-1.  The Sooners host No. 7 Iowa State at home next weekend.
