by Zein Jivani / The Daily Goals, goals and more goals! Just when you turn your gaze from the ice to peek at the scores for college football, the familiar blare of the horn indicates that the No. 7 Sooner Hockey club buries yet another puck into its opponent’s net.
OU’s full offensive prowess was on display this weekend as the Sooners easily handled visiting Missouri, beating the Tigers 10-2 Friday night and 8-1 Saturday. The Sooners outshot their opponents throughout this weekend’s three-game home stand, which included a 7-5 victory against upstart Adrian College, by a dizzying 129 shots on goal. The Sooners have scored at least five goals in each of their 10 victories this season. Juniors Owen Brewer and Kyle Allan and freshman Chris Nicolaou scored three goals each over the home stand. Brewer, who returned to the lineup seven games ago, continued his blazing pace by adding two scores in Saturday’s matchup, bringing his season total to eight goals. “I pride myself on scoring goals, I like to score,” he said. “Every game I set a goal to get at least two points a game no matter if it’s a goal and an assist, two goals or two assists.” Brewer tallied seven points in his last three games. Allan, who added four points — including a short-handed goal to help the Sooners avoid an upset against Adrian — leads the team with 12 goals after the first 11 games of the season. Allan said he is just working harder and good fortune has resulted into opportunities that he has converted into goals. But even with so much success, including a perfect home record, head coach Larry Donovan still is not satisfied with his team’s play. In most games, the Sooners have built a comfortable cushion only to relax and see their opponents chip away at the lead until the Sooners find their mojo put the game out of reach. “We just have to work on consistency,” Donovan said. “We haven’t played a complete game yet, but it will come. This weekend was OK, but I’m still not satisfied and I don’t think the players are either.” The players also believe they can find another gear and become even more efficient on the power play. This season the Sooners are a productive 31 percent with the man advantage. “A lot of my goals have been on the power play,” Allan said. “I think every game we get better on the power play, [and] we move the puck better.” The Sooners (10-1-0) next travel to Virginia for a showdown with No. 8 Liberty University. |
